  1. NETWORLD,BOSTON February, 1992. Open Windows Connection, Cogent's popular
  2. multiprotocol connectivity package for Microsoft Windows, has added an
  3. array of new connection types and front-end features which are designed to
  4. make the product fit into medium-to-large corporate network
  5. configurations. Cogent's Open Windows extends MS-Windows network
  6. functionality by combining full simultaneous multiprotocol support along
  7. with a powerful icon based common access method that allows users to
  8. access all of the typical corporate computing resources without special
  9. training or complicated connection procedures.

  11. This new release of Open Windows can now access service resources over FTP
  12. TCP/IP, Microsoft's TCP/IP, HP-TCP/IP, and SUN PC NFS in addition to the
  13. existing support for NetWare, MS-LAN Manager (MS, IBM, 3COM), Banyan
  14. VINES°, Wollongong TCP/IP (NFS) and Beame & Whiteside NFS. Open Windows
  15. now also supports new terminal emulation packages from Walker Richer Quinn
  16. (Reflection), and Persoft (SmarTerm) in addition to the already supported
  17. products from Novell (LAN WorkPlace for DOS), KEA (KEATerm), and
  18. Wollongong (AccessX).

  20. A number of new features have been have been added to the award winning
  21. (Top Products 1991, PC Week Labs) Open Windows Connection product
  22. including MS-Windows 3.1 support, AutoConnect, ServiceNames, and extra
  23. security and administration facilities, along with a new Windows-based
  24. installer.

  26. Cogent has also introduced a new factory-direct corporate support program
  27. that includes, training, priority service and product upgrades. According
  28. to John Pageler, VP Sales, "We are moving aggressively to capture the
  29. Windows connectivity market by targeting the networked corporate desktop
  30. with a comprehensive product and support plan that removes much of the
  31. work and risk that corporate MIS departments face in extending the desktop
  32. PCs access beyond the local departmental net. We will announce shortly a
  33. custom site licensing plan that will also ease the financial impact of
  34. adopting Open Windows as a corporate wide standard while also protecting
  35. the customer's long term technology investment. "

  37. In addition to the new product features, new sales channels will be added
  38. to the existing corporate direct method. Selected VARs with established
  39. business relations with Fortune 1000 customers will be added starting in
  40. the second quarter.

  42. "We frankly didn't anticipate such a rapid acceptance of Open Windows into
  43. corporate America. Our plan to run only a corporate direct plan for a year
  44. or more just won't keep up with the demand. By working with a few selected
  45. VARs who have established track records in installing the major LAN
  46. operating systems, (NetWare, VINES, LAN Manager and UNIX) we can provide
  47. the maximum geographical coverage and maintain a high level of
  48. responsiveness to our customer's needs. We are also finding that certain
  49. market segments including NetWare and VINES have extremely sophisticated
  50. VARs who will allow us to penetrate these segments faster and with greater
  51. depth." according to Charles Anderson, President.

  53. These new features are available in Cogent's Open Windows Connection
  54. version 1.1. The price of the product remains the same at $129 for the
  55. single user version along with substantial discounts on 10 and 100 pack
  56. licenses. Existing customers of Open Windows will receive free upgrades to
  57. the new version starting in March.
